The Ring (Mosaic Production)

Russ Solomon Park, McKinley Village, Sacramento, CA

Designer: Brenda Louie

I worked with Sacramento artist, Brenda Louie, to produce the mosaic surface of this metal sculpture. The metal ring itself was fabricated by Tri-C Machine in West Sacramento and the custom centerpiece is by Napa glass artist, Patti Wessman.

Brenda wanted to create a rich, jewel-toned surface studded with gold and shades of cobalt blue to accentuate the ring’s symbol of value. The sculpture is installed in a park of a new housing development. She had been robbed in the past and lost some precious items. So for this piece, she wanted to show that this new neighborhood was so safe, ‘you could leave your jewelry outside’.

I also created the ‘Cheers Russ’ signature section on the back of the ring.

From the City of Sacramento Art Program page about the piece, “‘The Ring’ also has a personal connection to the Sacramento community. It is marked on the back with “Cheers Russ,” in a similar way in which rings might be etched with a wedding date, a name, or expression of love. “Cheers Russ” was created using the signature of Russ Solomon, one of Sacramento’s most beloved arts supporters and the founder of Tower Records. It was a great honor to have this sculpture installed in Solomon Park and for it to be a symbol of Russ Solomon’s generosity.”
