Southern Crossing: You Make the Road by Walking

Collaborative Process Mural

LAYLA Leadership Academy, Napa High School Napa, CA | 2021

Commissioned by: On the Move Bay Area 4’ x 8’, latex on panel

Created in partnership with: Valley Youth for DACA

Facilitated by: Leslie Medine and On The Move

This collaborative mural was created by youth volunteers who supported over 100 local DACA applicants and wanted to honor their stories. Centered on the image of a family crossing the border into an unknown future, the design reflects the risks, strength, and one-way nature of that journey. Ancestral figures blow wind to support the travelers, while constellations above offer spiritual guidance. Painted by the youth in a group process, the mural is a powerful tribute to courage, community, and the belief that a better life can be built—one step at a time.
